Vines

One of the best things about vines is the shade they produce when trained up a trellis or arbor. Many people like to use ivy vines or a creeper vine species to add shade and privacy to their porch area. They are versatile and easily maintained plants.

If you want to add ivy or similar vines to your garden, just be careful to pick a variety that isn't too tough to control. Some vine species will quickly overrun your other plants and flowers at the root level and can kill your garden surprisingly fast. Get expert advice for your particular situation before buying any vines.

If your goal is to add vines to a wall (house, garden walls, etc.), a great idea is to set up a trellis system that hinges out. You can pick up these kinds of vine trellises at good garden supply stores. The advantage is convenience - you can prune the vines and keep the underlying wall much cleaner with a trellis that pulls away for easy access.

Bird lovers may want to choose a vine variety that attracts them, such as Dutchman's Pipe or Trumpet Creeper vines (see below). These and other vine species draw lots of birds, including Hummingbirds (Trumpet Creeper). They make a wonderful addition to any home or garden.
